For 20 years I was involved with a woman who was prone to fits of violence. It didn’t happen every day and it only got to the point of my fearing for my safety a few times. Like most women who find themselves in a relationship like this, I couldn’t see it for what it was. It seemed even harder to identify it as abuse because it was a lesbian relationship.
Recognizing the relationship as an abusive one was a difficult process that didn’t begin until that relationship ended. Recognizing that I had been raped by my partner, took much longer and is still something I am dealing with.
I am writing an article about domestic violence and rape in the gay community. If anyone is interested in being interviewed or sharing your stories for the article, please contact me.
The shroud of silence and shame needs to be lifted!
Take Heart,
Andrea
